At the date of this blog post publish, Android devices have reached 32% marketshare since it’s unveiling in 2007. 61% of enterprise businesses are now using VoIP. It might make sense for these two rapidly growing technologies to get together, wouldn’t it? The answer is a resounding yes as Digium has created an Android app that will integrate Android devices with their Switchvox VoIP business phone system. Let’s see just what that really means in the real world of business:

  • Make Calls: Call your clients or your coworkers from Switchvox Mobile; the call looks like it’s coming from your desk

  • Check Voicemail: Listen to your voicemail and return calls right from the Voicemail screen

  • Check Calls: Call Logs show your incoming, outgoing, and missed calls. You can easily return calls right from the Call Log

  • Manage Greetings: You can choose which of your voicemail greetings your callers hear

  • Company Directory: The Directory lets you quickly find your coworkers’ extensions and email addresses, then call or send an email.

  • Activate Call Rules: Activate your call rules right from your smartphone. If you’re in an offsite meeting and can’t be disturbed, it’s easy to send your calls to voicemail.

The above describes the business use of the app that Digium created to integrate an Android device into their Switchvox System. However, there is more to the story than just that. You can easily download a SIP client from the Android Market and turn your smartphone into a SIP Softphone. You can then easily connect to your Switchvox system as an extension on your VoIP PBX. I personally use the Counterpath Bria which works great, but you can choose from many other options. TeleDynamic recommends the Bria, Fring and SIPDroid to our Switchvox customers who want to utilize Android VoIP services.

In a future blog, I’ll take up the Switchvox app for the Apple iPhone.
